Curatorial Essay
Daydream

Everyone has the freedom of imagination, but few people actually can freely imagine themselves, and we often say that they have a special talent for creating high standards of imagination. It is not easy to get new stimuli in the monotonous pattern of daily life, especially at a time when regular life has been curtailed during a global pandemic. Under these circumstances, it might be tempting to fantasize about something very colorful or transcendent to the real world, but if we could look at things around us from a slightly different perspective and add a little bit of imagination, we could create a much more interesting and new daily life. This is why I chose The mysterious antique shop for this exhibition.

This work, which began with an interesting imagination of what it would be like if the artist herself set up an antique shop, created a new object by adding a figurative freshness and ingenious imagination to everyday objects that might be seen in an antique shop. Unusual and whimsical fantasies are sometimes seen as useless, but the new stimuli these images give to the viewers in today’s age are clearly valuable. We, who are not familiar with daydreaming, need practice to embody the superficial ideas in our heads into a specific imagination. The sophisticated design imaginative images of The mysterious antique shop can be a means of inspiration and stimulation.

For those live a monotonous and limited daily life without seeking any change or novelty, making imagination can be more difficult than anything else. I hope that this work, which contains the artist’s imagination in a concrete form, will be a new stimulus to our lives. Curator Hayoung Kim
Individual Work Essay
Made under the theme of an imaginary antique shop, the work consists of a total of twenty objects, including umbrellas, telephones, bicycles, chandeliers and matches. The first thing to notice in this work is its fancy decorative visuality. The objects, each with its own figurative movements along with mysterious music, instantly catch the eye. Because of its various colors and unfamiliar shapes, the work is first recognized as an object that does not exist in reality, but its title and the appearance of some familiar objects make us realize that each item is a common object in our daily lives.

The core of this work lies in its juxtaposition of reality and unreality. The objects themselves are part of our daily lives, but the imagination is clearly unrealistic. However, the artist uses detailed 3D techniques to reveal her fantasies as if they were real, and even the figurative movements of the objects make the viewer feel more realism. As such, the artist seeks to blur the boundary between reality and unreality while expressing her fantasy by focusing on realistic material expression and materiality, based on everyday objects. Thus, each image, which is clearly illogical and irrational, makes us doubt the feasibility of its existence due to the various details set by the artist.

The artist used the image of an eye as a device to show a real presence, especially in the goldfish in the handbag used as the artist’s character. In the end, it can be seen as expressing the boundary between revealing reality and showing the imaginary world that she has built.

The important thing is that these imaginations do not just end up as a single work. The design images presented by the artist make the audience re-recognize the shaping features of everyday objects that had never been thought before. Also, the visual stimuli of colorful images create the possibility of another imagination that allows one to put one’s imagination back on top of artist’s images.
