‘Sculpture’ that lost ‘Space’

How should artworks be exhibited outside the physical space of the 'Art Gallery'? Where should paintings, sculptures, and installations be stand in cyberspace that have lost the experience of size, texture, and space? Can an online platform serve as a practical exhibition space, rather than just uploading photo of artwork? This project, which started from these questions, is an experimental attempt to find the answers through Fine me which a sculptures and installation works at the same time.
Hwihyang Lee's Fine me, the only sculptural piece of the exhibition, usually placed in a dark corner that doesn't even reach the light in the actual exhibition space. So it can be stepped on by the audiences who wander around the exhibition space without finding work. Sculptures that are broken during the exhibition by audiences, deepen the meaning of the work. Through this unintentional hide-and-seek with the piece and audience, the artist communicates with people and also expands stories of work.
But 《clickscrollzoom.com》 lost physical space. So Fine me is presented in the form of GIF that familiar to us. Only the form of the work remains, omitted from the background of the exhibition hall. And it is scattered all over the page. The location and appearance of small sculptures are varied, and the viewers face each other as they click the page. By this clicking, audience can find the work and that action can be the continue of the hide-and-seek that occurring in real world. As if people look around the exhibition hall to find a small hidden work or can’t find it and step on or just pass it.
Size, texture, and mass are important elements to understand sculpture works. And space is essential to feel these elements. But on the cyber world, the audience cannot feel these things. Through the implementation of the viewing method on online. Through the implementation the viewing method of artwork called ‘hide-and-seek with the audience’, tried to effectively convey the meaning of the sculpture to people in the virtual exhibition hall. Clicking, that familiar to us, used as a way to see the artwork in this exhibition. Hope that this will be a small clue to the presentation of the work in a new exhibition hall, cyber space.
Individual Work Essay
The world that we live changes rapidly. In a situation where hundreds of information can be found with a simple click, our range of interests expands more and more. In order to survive in this environment, humans increasingly classify and absorb information according to personal standards and easily forget the rest. But isn’t there a truth hidden in these overlooked things, that we can’t see but we must know clearly?
The Fine me presented in this exhibition is Hwihyang Lee's new attempt. She usually made girl image named ‘Dahye’, which is her persona, to express the allusion of child abuse beyond helplessness and sadness. By Fine me she breaks away from her existing autobiographical work method, and she tries to communicate with her audience interactively through the exhibition viewing method 'Hide-and-Seek'. Through this, artist tried to create a work that not only provoke individual sympathy, but also urge socially valuable changes in people's consciousness.
From the sky-blue sneaker located at the starting point of the page, viewers can find sculptures appearing in various form at diverse locations. The pieces, which are made of clay and dried, are generally light ivory color. They contain only yellow, red, and blue that seem to be traces of abuse. Those are vulnerable to small irritations because they unfired. They are small and fragile like children hiding in an invisible space. Those discovered through accidental ‘clicking’, attract the audience into hide and seek. Unintentionally, the audience become tagger and find traces of the hidden children. However, people who leave the exhibition page do not know the number and condition of the children.
In reality, we also encounter hidden facts that exist, but invisible. The 'nth room' that recently surfaced in our society is similar. Signs may have been there before. But we blindfolded and could not see it properly. The reality revealed in the end is terrible, but is it forgotten and again overlooked?
There are facts, certainly there are, but invisible if we don't care and cover our eyes. Like Fine me, you can't see without looking at the site carefully. In the exhibition, you could find only small clues such as a part of child's body and a pair of socks and shoes. Hopefully this short hide-and-seek will be a chance to find the truth and help them, just as you find pieces before they break.
